Radio's in the Park
Once a month, we join a radio activity referred to as RUSS (Radios in the Park) or RITP (Radio in the Park). This activity is not schedules or originated by SanHamRadio, but rather an activity that many of our members join. It is coordinated via a ham group in Mesa, AZ. RUSS is not held during the hot and summer months. Usually October throgh April given that the sceduled month is not experiencing a heat wave.
It is an activity where many ham radio operators throughtout the valley choose a location to setup and test their equipment with other participants throughtout the valley. The objective is to run one's radio equipment off the grid to see who in the valley or where in the valley is reachable from their location with their specific equipment. Offgrid means not plugged into the grid like a home outlet or shore power. Power must be from something other than power supplied by a utility company. This may include fuel powered generators, solar power systems or batteries. This is a good thing to know in the case of an emergency or catastrophe(natural or otherwise). This activity allows a ham radio operator to know his/her ability and capacity to communicate when all other methods of communication are inoperable or unavailable.
RUSS/RITP is held from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM on the scheduled day. The main frequency will be 146.460 with a PL tone of 77.0 for VHF and 7.178 for HF. Note that if 146.460 is used without a PL Tone, you will be excluded from being heard by those using the PL Tone. Keep this in mind if you are trying to communciate with a location and they seem to not be able to hear you. They may have the PL Tone set. Of course, you may operate on other frequencies or modes as you wish to make contacts. The point of this exercise is to exercise our skills, operate while off of grid power, to make contacts, and to have fun!

Campouts
A couple of times a year, some members will go on a campout to test their radio equipment in the wild. It is also a good time to test out the campgear and equipment. Some sleep in tents, some sleep in the open and some just can't sleep, ha.
This is a good opportunity to test out the HF rigs because the, rather large, HF atenna's can be setup with all the open space. Many of us have reached places like Russia, South American, Central America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Parts of Africa. The only limiting factor is weather and equipment. We hope that you will come join us sometime.
Portable Emergency Generator Day
Monsoon season is coming. Now is a good time to start your generator and make sure everything is working. Bring your potable generator to the stake center parking lot and start and run your generator. Members from the stake will be assisting if you need it.
If you're looking to purchase a generator, see what others are using and why.
Also, stake amateur radio operators will be participating in a valley wide exercise in the church parking lot.
Members of the community are invited to both.
